Gaining Power Question???
OK, here's the deal:
Played baseball and 2 year college ball. Was 5'10, 155 to 165 the entire time. I BATTED 3RD, 4TH, AND 5TH ALL THROUGH HIGH SCHOOL AND JR COLLEGE AND IT WAS WELL DESERVING! So, at 21, done with college, did nothing for about 4 years and got into softball at 25. I knew nothing about the game then, but I can tell you I weighed 160 to 165 and brought the most God awful Easton Hammer to my 1st practice. I have no clue what balls we were using, but my guess is they were old game balls (ASA). I hit one out that first practice. So, 34 now, have REALLY been getting into the game, reading non-stop about swinging, lifting, swing mechanics..... basically anything you can think of, INCLUDING trolling around here for a couple of years, AND YES, I HAVE READ EVERYTHING AND DONE EVERYTHING! Last year I was at 190 and with a Freak 98 I only hit 2 that hit the fence and I was taking things serious. I got PISSED! So yeah, I ended up doing the A-Rod/Bonds off-season workout routine Bench and squat were out of sight, got up to 205 weight, went to the cages all the time, read AND watched EVEN MORE, did the Mancenko (spelling???) drill for about 5 weeks only because I was out of time and......... GUESS WHAT HAPPENED THIS YEAR?????I only hit one fly ball that I connected with that hit the fence on the fly NONE went over!I am certain I am not the only one that went through this. I guess basically my LONG question is: Why did I hit one out over a 305 fence at a younger age with a baseball swing and a much lighter weight with less strength and a 30 ounce Hammer, and I can't do it now after I can bench 300 and swing a 28 oz Freak with much heavier body weight after READING AND DOING EVERY SINGLE THING YOU BOZO's POST TO DO????? The only thing I can think of is I changed my swing dramatically with a Manny Ramierez type leg kick, but that is mostly because everyone in softball constantly beats in your head "you have time to load up in softball". So I am just watching videos and doing the EXACT SAME SWING AS EVERYONE. However, on a different note, I had a new SS on my team this year, 20 years old, excellent player in baseball, took 2 years off and joined softball......... this boy hit it out and has a tiny frame, well, similar to my 5'10, 160 frame, has a complete baseball swing, AND HE HIT ONE OUT FIRST PRACTICE AND A FEW THIS YEAR! I guess my point is, does size really matter??? Has anyone else actually bulked up, but yet lost power???? |

I did one a couple months back from a hard swing believe it or not. The thing was it was VERY high up and very tiny. I'm guessing this is what yours was??? If so, I actually laid low for just 2 weeks. Yes, the pain was as intense as a full pull, but just tiny and up higher. Being so small it seemed to heal in a couple of weeks

I'm guessing your "power" at the younger age was generated more by your flexibility than actual power. I would also be willing to bet your hands are slower now than they were 13 years ago.

not the same here.. always had some sort of power. but this year hit a long term work out program. started in december until current. and i will keep going in the gym.. my strength from december till now has done the same, went up through roof. bench sets of 315, squats of 400. and only weighting 195-198 height 5'10".
now last year and not working out and just playing, in one league hit 5 hrs.. this year 16 hrs my second league hit 4-5 hrs ( cant remember but not a lot).. this year 15hrs. last year tournaments. 0 hrs this year tournaments 10 hrs.. this year i had a few different bats i got a miken vicious, and an scx3. last year used my freak 98. i have changed my swing dramatically from years past. now i hit kind of like albert pujols. and grip the handle different with more of a baseball type swing.. so yeh weight training and some more size has changed my game.

I got stronger and bigger over the last offseason and hit fewer homeruns. Don't know what the answer is, but i'm sure its in the mechanics of your swing.

Throwing Accuracy Help/Training
Is this g2g? Bear with me on the story..........
A buddy of mine and myself went to Wal-Mart for lunch today to get some wings at the deli. The bad part is that it was after 12:30 and the noon rush hour lunch had already been there. What we got looked good, but it was them old and stale bbq wings that were very sticky. So, we left the parking lot and were eating them already and did not like them, so we came up with an idea. WE WOULD JUST THROW THEM AT OBJECTS FOR TARGET PRACTICE! Now, we are both softball players, so it is not just juvenile target practice, we actually were trying to hit targets. I was driving and buddy went first. He saw a pick up truck and attempted an over the top of my car throw into the bed of the truck. BULLSEYE! So we got into it more and this is where is get "fun", but yet tricky! (sidenote, you know you sort of have to do these throws from the infield from time to time, so it really is practice!) We then got on the road, laughing a bit, but we know it actually took skill. We are driving on a 45 mph road and I just finished one when I saw a pedestrian walking down the road on the sidewalk. I slung my bone from the drivers seat WHILE driving and nailed the poor bastard in the head! In short, he went 2 for 5 and I ended up 4 for 4! Can I throw better than him in games???? From what I have seen in the field I think so, but I just want to know if this is a good judgment of accuracy??? Also, we all did over the top throws, and he was 0 for 3 on pedestrians, but 2 for 2 on automobiles. I was 3 for 3 on pedestirans, and 1 for 1 on a stop sign the I blew right through, but the funny part is the wings was so sticky and stale it actually STUCK TO THE STOP SIGN! Plus I was driving so fast through the stop sign. Oh, and answer question 1 first, if this is good training for throwing accuracy, but I also would like to know if this is g2g for 30+ year olds, or only high school kids??? And of course, does this mean if I can throw more accurate than my buddy in a game??? P.S. Sorry if any SBF are reading this and got pegged with a wing today! Densely populated area! |
